Quick review: Southbank Coffee
Lorène and Alex brought Melbourne’s cafe culture straight to Munich. While their house-roasted beans and perfectly poured flat whites draw a crowd, the real reason locals keep returning to this cozy Westend specialty coffee shop is the genuinely warm, Australian-style hospitality.
Visit if:
You crave a genuine Melbourne-style cafe experience, complete with perfectly textured milk and their signature "Magic" (a stronger flat white).
You love a welcoming neighborhood local where the owners are behind the machine and remember your name.
You want expertly brewed filter coffee paired with a freshly baked Franzbrötchen.
Skip if:
You are visiting on a Monday or Tuesday (they are closed).
You need a laptop-friendly cafe to work from on the weekend (seating is highly limited).

What to Order at Southbank
The Signature: Order The Magic (a double ristretto pulled into ~160ml of textured milk). The shorter extraction ratio pushes the coffee's flavor profile forward, allowing the espresso to perfectly cut through the milk.
The Quick Fix: Grab the rotating batch brew filter coffee. It’s consistently dialed in and offers the fastest, cleanest read on their current single-origin roast.
The Summer Pick: Take a cold brew tonic or a coconut iced matcha served on the street terrace.
The Vibe at Southbank Coffee
Located on the quiet, cobblestoned Guldeinstraße beneath mature trees, Southbank offers a highly relaxed, Australian-style community cafe environment. The exterior features modest signage and outdoor seating with yellow metal chairs set under string lights.
Inside, the service model heavily prioritizes hospitality. The owners work the floor and the espresso machine directly, greeting first-time visitors with the same attention as returning regulars. The space is explicitly designed for lingering and conversation. To maintain this atmosphere, laptops are quietly discouraged on weekends.
Coffee Program at Southbank
The terracotta-tiled bar is anchored by a high-end Sanremo espresso machine and Anfim Milano dual grinders, alongside a pastry case featuring handwritten labels.
The coffee program is built on a tight relationship with Rajmond Dénes, who locally roasts their beans (the same roaster behind Roca Junior in Maxvorstadt). The retail shelf clearly displays the country, region, variety, processing method, and roast date for full transparency. During our visit the highlights included:
Filter Roast: Bette Buna from Guji (Enat Buna 74110, natural process).
Espresso Roast: Sidamo (Heirloom variety, washed process).

Review Methodology: Southbank Specialty Coffee
Field Evaluations: Two incognito visits (Autumn 2025, Summer 2026).
On the Bar: The house line, locally roasted for Southbank by Rajmond Dénes.
The Order: Batch brew (first visit), cold brew tonic (second visit).
Retail Shelf Check: Verified labeling transparency on current offerings, including Bette Buna (Ethiopia, Guji, Enat Buna 74110, natural, filter) and Sidamo (Ethiopia, Sidamo, Heirloom, washed, espresso), noting roast dates and origin details.
Editorial Transparency: Every portrait starts with an unannounced visit, paid for completely out of pocket. Where it makes sense, we return more than once. Contact with the business comes only afterward. We cross-reference our field impressions against public sources (including Google reviews and business sites) to ensure our Visit if and Skip if recommendations rest on consistent observed behavior, not a single tasting. There was no payment, sponsorship, or consideration provided for this review.
